Spanish Fork Reach 2 and ULS Valve Station Projects

The Spanish Fork Canyon Reach 2 Project involved the construction of a 96” diameter mortar lined and coated steel pipeline within the shoulder of the heavily traveled US Highway 6 for a distance of 2.75 miles.  Each pipe were forty feet long, weigh 55,000 pounds and the joints were welded together both inside and out.  The pipeline is installed at an average depth of sixteen feet in a work zone only 50 feet wide.  Portions of the excavation had to be blasted from solid rock and other sections included extensive dewatering with protection of springs and a nearby river. The unique use of two excavators and state-of-the-art slide rail shoring system for pipe installation proved to be faster and easier than the use of a conventional crane. The contract specified that two-lane traffic must be maintained 24-7 during the course of the construction in the canyon.  A temporary traffic lane had to be constructed in order to accomplish this requirement.  An extensive traffic control plan was implemented and the project was completed without incident or any major traffic interruptions.  A quarter mile portion in the fill section required engineering and construction of a near vertical MSE wall ten feet high.  Two areas where the slope section had to be steepened required soil nails and reinforced gunite for stabilization in an area fifteen hundred feet long and up to thirty-five feet high.

The Utah Lake System Isolation and Flushing Valve Structure Project required construction of a dual ninety-six and sixty inch pigging station structure with (2) twenty-four and (1) forty-two inch cone valves, installation of approximately twelve hundred feet of ninety-six and sixty inch welded steel pipe and a new ten-acre earthen flushing basin requiring 90,000 cubic yards of excavation.  Associated work on the project included highway crossings, surface restoration, electrical and fiber optic installation, site work and approximately seven hundred cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete on the new structure.
